Encouraging Children to Take Initiative
At World Champion Tae Kwon Do, we have a five stripes program to encourage our younger students to take the initiative to do various good deeds. Different color stripes are rewarded for different types of actions but most of them are required for our quarter annual belt testing. This program is designed to develop initiative, respect, responsibility, and good behavior.
There are five stripes in our system:
Black Stripes: Cultivating Exceptional Attitudes (CEA) - The CEA program combines key attitudinal attributes in a child's development in a concise, action oriented format to encourage students to raise their attitudes to new heights at home and at school. The six CEA attitudinal attributes are as follows:
1. Showing respect
2. Learning through appreciation
3. Promoting cleaniness
4. Taking Responsibility
5. Demonstrating love and thankfulness
6. Going above and beyond
Students will be required to earn seven "Attitude stripes" per quarter. This is a mandatory testing requirement for their next rank. If the student earns 10 attitude stripes in one quarter, that student will receive a medal plus an "exceptional attitude" star for their uniform. Once they have received 4 stars for their uniform, they will receive a large trophy for having a whole year of exceptional attitudes.
Blue Stripe: Knowledge Through Reading - The Blue Stripe is earned when the student brings back the Blue Stripe Application verifying that the required number of books based on his/her age or belt level has been read. These books are chosen by the student and/or parent. However, we would like to encourage you to challenge your child. This stripe is intended for them to gain knowledge of the people and world around them. As Master Kim put it: "You can experience things and go to unknown places by reading a book." Encourage your child to read books about exciting places and interesting people. Help them find books that will interest them so that they will be motivated to read and explore. Any book that the student is required to read for Literature Class can be counted towards this stripe. Small picture books are adequate for the beginning reader. We leave the decision up to you as a parent.
Red Stripe: School Success - The Red Stripe is given to a student when they bring back the Red Stripe Application. This is a progress report that will inform Master Kim of his students performance in school. This is beneficial for a couple of reasons. First: Master Kim will be able to see how his students perform in other aspects of their lives. Second: This report will be used to gauge improvements in a student who is struggling with homework, behavior, or attendance. Consistent problems will be discussed with the child and parent in an effort to help in any way possible. This is intended to encourage each student to always do his/her best in school. Any improvement, even small, will be recognized and rewarded.
Green Stripe: Tae Kwon Do Techniques - Consistent attendance and hard work can attain the Green Stripe. This stripe is awarded when the student has demonstrated that he/she has successfully memorized the Tae Kwon Do techniques required for their belt level. This will be evaluated during a pre-test that will be held during regular class time a week or so before Belt Testing. If, for some reason, the student fails to receive this stripe during pre-testing, they may come to another class and try again. Instructors will challenge your child to perform at their very highest level and will give whatever direction and encouragement they can to ensure a successful pretest However, each student is expected to work hard to achieve success.
How can parents help?
The Black, Blue, Red and Green Stripes will be required if the student wants to Belt Test. We want to help in whatever way we can to ensure that every student is successful. Together, we believe that we can encourage them to be victorious in achieving every goal they set. All of these categories are required behavior for a well rounded and happy life. So let's work together as a team and help our World Champion Tae Kwon Do students achieve their dreams!
